Sounds like the DW mix is heavier on room mics (with not much EQ on them at that) while the Eastars mix has much less room content. I know the drums are tuned differently, and they obviously have different heads (which makes a huge difference), but this doesn't seem enough to explain the 'up close' feel of the Easters mix vs. the roomier vibe of the DW. Seems like there's more than just head swapping/tuning going on (altered mix settings?). The Eastars are made of much softer wood and are certainly not sealed inside, so that soft, sound-absorbing environment will suck up the mids and highs giving a more 'scooped' frequency spectrum (totally in line with what I"m hearing), while the harder, sealed sugar maple DW shells are less hyped, flatter sounding (also part of what I'm hearing), but the ambient feel of one with the intimate feel of the other leaves me wondering what else is in play? I do very much like the video, please don't misunderstand. It's a great topic to explore! I'm a huge fan of people figuring out what matters in the drum world vs. what is just cleaver marketing. 👍

I like the shaker thing on the high hats. Air balloons in acrylic drums.... cool. Especially if you like played weddings or something you could color coordinate the balloons to the event. Maybe water balloons 🤔. Ive seen another channel try it once and did notice a difference but id like to see what you could do with the aluminum foil lined around the inside of the kick drum like Bonham supposedly did.

Doesn't look worth the money as a whole, but the pad cables running in the stand is a nice idea and probably gives more space for customization

I like the balloon hack. You are creating barriers for the internal pressure wave to have to deal with, which slows it down. I've never been a fan of moongel, tape, wallet, or any other method of muting the head. This way, it allows the heads to still do their thing. I would probably do that for the kick and snare (but with less balloons, maybe). Love the channel, David. Cheers from Hillsdale, Kansas (KC area)!

I really like the sound of Mapex drums, and with the starter kits like this its nice to know your drums were made in Taiwan, not China. About 20 years ago Mapex changed the world of drumming options for drummers by offering good sounding entry to mid level drums that still sounded not just good, but really good. And you could afford them. Mapex finally gave the home drummer who plays as a hobby something that sounded and looked good that they could afford. There used to not be "good" entry level drum kits back in the day. It was a pro kit, or crap. Thanks Mapex! You Rock!

Glad i pretty much skipped the whole deep bass drum fad. The deepest bass drum i ever owned was 16 until last week when my dad found a full ELX fusion kit for $50 and bought it for me so now i want to cut it down to 14. He still likes deep kicks for some reason. His DW is 18 deep and it does sound good but just not my thing.

I have to thank you, rdavidr. You might've seen me inquire about a Ludwig floor tom I used to own back in the 90's on some drum forums you and I have belonged to in the past. I used to refer to it as "The Ludwig Mystery Floor Tom" and it was attached to a 20/12/14x4 red sparkle Stewart kit (and I've loved 20/12/16 kits ever since). Well, THE MYSTERY IS SOLVED. Even though that 16x16 floor tom had a b&o badge, Mahogany Cortex finish and large classic lugs, it was all applied to a Standard shell, because the inside of that drum looked EXACTLY like the inside of your Standard drums! This leads me to believe a story I once heard about how, in order to help get a new Ludwig dealership going, Ludwig used to offer dealers, drum kits that looked like a regular Ludwig drumkit on the outside, but used the less expensive Standard shell. Thus lowering the price for the dealer to get them. ....so, thank you very much rdavidr. I have my toms in front of the snare drum and my ride cymbal over the kick for ergonomic purposes.

Don't be too happy about the fake mungel. After a while, its edges begin to peel off and rattles appear.

So, the doohickey, aka tge 22ga steel on the hihat stand. Im betting he had the bottom hat on and the clutch tightened with the steel as the top hat. And he just pressed harder with if you look closely, deforms the steel in an upward manner indicating its being pushed down against a cup shaped or cymbal shaped piece. Because it is locked in with the clutch it doesnt swivel and im gussing the string isnt really a part of it or serves some secondary purpose outside of audio function. I also personally do tgis effect with just a normal hihat. You step on a locjed clutch and roll on the hat, then as ur rolling put a TON of weight into ur left leg and the pitch of the hihat goes up. Hopefully you see this cuz i thought it was interesting since its like a warbly exaggerated effect of what i already do sometimes.

While I like the percussive sound of the drums with the balloons in them, I definitely prefer the musical boom from the toms without the ballons.

The acrylic kit with the baloons in the video sounded pretty bad to me but when you did it to your acrylic kit I thought it sounded better. It just gives it that dead 70's sort of sound. Normally I don't like the sound of acrylic kits and this hack seems to fix that since it totally deadens the actual shells from resonating and you just hear the short decay from the head
